Watch Your Goldfish Mating

Seeing your goldfish mating for the first time can be quite an entertaining show for you and any guests you might have in your home with you. If you weren't sure of your individual goldfish's gender, you can easily make the distinction when you first see your goldfish mating in their aquarium. A male goldfish will be seen chasing the female around the tank and will have white spots on its gills and chest.

It's important that you watch

While it can be entertaining, you may feel a little strange watching -- kind of like you're interrupting a private moment, but it's important to keep a watchful eye on the action. During a goldfish mating event, the male will chase the female all over the tank in a relentless manor, basically trying to knock the eggs out of her so he fertilize them. In the excitement of the event, the female will actually do everything they can to escape the male and have often been seen jumping out of their aquarium.

The nature of things

Unfortunately, Mother Nature has safeguards in place to prevent over-population and it's no more evident than after your goldfish mate. They will eat the majority of the eggs no matter how much food you eat them. It's thought they may be able to tell which eggs are healthy and which aren't, but nobody really knows.

It happens all the time

When the temperature of the fish's water rises quickly, goldfish mating is likely to occur. Goldfish tend to thrive in large ponds for this reason since their temperature is regulated by the sun and wind, rather than the air in your home and the aquarium light. If you want to induce the mating process, turn the heater up in your tank a few degrees and sit back.
